Oregon Celebrates 157th Birthday and You Are Invited!

Our great state of Oregon is celebrating its 157th birthday this year and the Oregon State Capitol Foundation wants to invite you its party. A celebration is planned 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 13. If you are thinking that doesn’t sound quite right, yes, the actual date Oregon became a state is Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14, but since that falls on a Sunday, the celebration is a day earlier this year.

There will be music for the entire celebration, costumed interpreters, games, free birthday cake while supplies last, a passport to a gift bag for children and a raffle drawing, replica pioneer wagons, photo opportunities with a live gold man, aka the Oregon Pioneer, and Dr. John McLoughlin, the Father of Oregon.

The Oregon State Constitution will be on display in the Rotunda during the celebration and members from the State Archives will be on hand to discuss the document and its history. There will be an exhibit of winning essays from the Salem Keizer School District “Why I Love Oregon” essay contest and an Oregon Land Claim game hosted by Willamette Heritage Center.

For more information regarding the birthday celebration, call Visitor Services at 503-986-1388 or visit www.oregonlegislature.gov.
